Creating the Kraken Rum Throne: A Bespoke Masterpiece
When the Kraken Rum team approached me for a custom project as part of their League of Darkness Competition, I knew this was going to be an exciting challenge. As an artist who loves working with intricate designs and bespoke creations, the idea of crafting a throne fit for a pirate captain had me hooked from the start.
Hand-Carved Octopus & Tentacle Details
The Kraken Rum throne quickly became one of my favorite projects. Each armrest of the throne features a hand-carved octopus, its intricate tentacles wrapping elegantly around the legs and back of the chair. I wanted this piece to be an homage to Kraken’s legendary octopus imagery, so the attention to detail was key. It took hours of careful hand carving to bring the tentacles to life, giving the throne a dark and mysterious edge worthy of the Kraken brand.
A Ship's Wheel, Neon Sign, and Kraken Logo
One of the standout features of the throne is the ship’s wheel carved into the back, paired with a custom neon sign displaying the iconic Kraken Rum logo. The neon gives the throne a contemporary twist, while the ship’s wheel keeps it rooted in the lore of seafaring adventure—making it the perfect blend of old-world pirate aesthetics and modern branding.
Custom Leather Embroidery and Compass Details
The leather backing was another showstopper, featuring custom embroidery of the famous Kraken logo, as seen on the rum bottles. We even inset a working compass into the armrest, so any pirate captain lucky enough to sit in this one-of-a-kind throne can plot their course across open waters. It’s these small, unique touches that turn a custom throne into a true work of art.
My Young Apprentice
One of the most special moments during the project was having my 4-year-old son Finnbar by my side. He got involved in the process and even helped carve a small section of the throne. Here’s a picture of my young apprentice proudly working on the piece:
Watching him work with such enthusiasm added an extra layer of meaning to the project, making it a true family affair.
